There are many things that come across as a “first time” in our life, but having your own home is more than that, it is a milestone. You work hard before you get one and once you have it, it becomes an experience of a lifetime. It is about breaking old habits, changing rituals and accepting new environment. Time to let go of so many beautiful memories for exchange of brighter times ahead. But more than just the memories it is also about leaving “things” that you may not want to be a part of your journey ahead. There can be a huge list of those however, in this post am sharing with you 15 things to junk before moving into a new home. This is an attempt to make your transfer a lot less lighter & hassle free. So take out that notebook and start putting a check as you go one point at a time.

BED MATTRESS

Did you know, that you are suppose to rotate and deep clean your mattress for any dust/dead skin often? How often do you do that? Even if you do not, on an average the life span of a mattress is 7-10 years. So when shifting this might be a good thing to check on.

INCOMPLETE CROCKERY SET

How many times have you had a situation when you have a particular set of plates that are odd and you think of them only when there is a matching number of guests coming. Sounds familiar? While moving into a new home, perhaps discarding this set would help making more space into your new kitchen.

DISCOLOURED BEDDING

There are 3 kinds of beddings, the festive kind, the daily ones & the ones that are to be discarded. Basically with no expiry dates. Some keep it to cover their couch in case they get their house painted & others keep them to make a bundle of more stuff that will not be used.

TOYS/ GAMES KIDS HAVE OUTGROWN

Without judging any one else, in my own family there are people who have kept products/ toys related to their kids which they had bought from the US and they feel that they are “too posh” to declutter. Or their kids themselves just do not let it go, every time they see those things coming out of the storage room. While shifting this will be a good time to let go off these, unless you planning to have another kid in the future offcourse.

NOT SO “QUICK FIX” PRODUCTS

Thanks to quick fix, there is always something that can be fixed. However, when would that happen is unknown. If you have something that has been broken and kept to be fixed “someday” but that someday has not arrived in years, then the chances are you really do not need it anymore.

WRINKLED ART PRINTS/ PHOTOGRAPHS

With time the art prints or photographs might get wrinkled or stained, making them look not so photogenic anymore. It is better to either get a new print if possible or just discard them for a new painting print later. After all how long can you keep looking at the same painting. If it is a print, then get a new one.

GODREJ METAL WARDROBE

The good ol “safe” metal wardrobes that have more of a nostalgic value than real use. In today’s times, when most of us keep most of our money in banks and use cards instead. Or use bank lockers, it surely makes more sense to invest in a good locker which can be put inside your new swanky wardrobe. The good news is, Godrej has a line of lockers too.

FLAT PILLOWS/CUSHIONS

There are many different pillows available in the market today. From basic cotton ones, to the memory foam one that comes with aloe gel and off course the OOTP feather filled pillows. As per your budget get a new set.

VINTAGE GADGETS

When we talk about gadgets and technology, it is improbable that one type of gadget would last forever. Still you would find an old CD player at times sitting comfortably in a corner. As if waiting to be used again, this might be a good time to let it go.

FLOWER VASE

When it comes to a flower vase, there are a few which we buy and then some that came in with the flowers on one of the occasions. Never to be used again. Unless, you really do love gardening and having fresh flowers in each room in your home, it’s time to give them up.

MAGAZINES

The ironic bit, when it comes to magazines it is a lot about trends and what is happening now. Infact that is why we buy them, do know about what is happening around us. Still we save them as if they will get refreshed and next time when we will open them a new scandal or trend will show up. The truth is, you do not need them anymore.

FESTIVE LIGHTS/ LANTERNS

With the influx of cheap lighting in the market we have n number of lighting options for the next time Diwali or New Year is around. Unless you got basic fairy lights that you can use to decorate, it might be a good option to let them go for now.

BOOKS

For all you bibliophiles out there, if you cannot take care of the already read books and have a voracious appetite for new ones, then pass them on. Except a few, that might be collector items or a gift. Give them up to a library.

PERSONALISED OLD FURNITURE

It is understood that you got a couch made when your first child was born and you went all the way to choose the board and the upholstery for it. But let’s face it, at times the whole idea of renewing a present piece of furniture can cost a lot more than buying a new one. So be wise and get an idea about how much would it cost.

CURTAINS

Curtains come in many different sizes & styles. You might not be having false ceiling in your present home but the new one might have a cut out rather than a pelmet for you to hand them in. So when taking over your new home, so measure your windows. Since the present curtains may not fit in, into the plan anymore.

The list can go on, from those little knick knacks that you have got bored of to the bathroom accessories. Obviously in the end you need to take your time and choose what sparks joy and what might be just moving the mess from your past to the future. So do it wisely. If you think that I have missed on any important pointer in the list, then please feel free to write to me on my Facebook page or the Insta page. Happy shifting!
